Originally from Buffalo, Tom moved to Pittsburgh when he graduated from college. He majored in labor relations and received a master’s degree from Cornell University before he was recruited by United Steelworkers to be part of their negotiating team. Passionate about helping others, Tom found his career fulfilling.
As the steel industry experienced huge losses in the 1970s Tom saw firsthand the impact this had on local families. Many workers who thought they had a solid career were suddenly out of work. As companies went bankrupt, people lost their pensions and healthcare. Tom tried to help retirees find health coverage, but many people were struggling.
While families grappled with economic hardship, Tom saw the way local nonprofit agencies met the needs of this vulnerable community. Food banks and financial assistance programs were vital in providing aid to laid off steelworkers. When Tom retired, he decided that he wanted to be part of an organization that helped local families in need.
Tom’s wife Cathy had volunteered with SHIM in the past, and as residents of the South Hills, it felt like a good fit. As financial supporters of SHIM for over a decade, Tom felt that giving his time and energy was a good next step.
“I really like giving locally. I feel like I can see the difference my donations make.”
Tom joined our volunteer team in 2019 helping with food pantry operations. Eager to find physical volunteer opportunities, Tom does everything from unloading thousands of pounds of food from our truck to harvesting corn. Tom also helps pass out food at two of our distribution sites and delivers food to homebound pantry participants. He even helps at SHIM’s community garden at Gilfillan Farm.
One of the things Tom appreciates is the immediacy of the aid he helps to provide. After harvesting fresh produce at Gilfillan Farm on Mondays, he helps to distribute it to neighbors in need on Tuesdays. “Even Whole Foods can’t do it that fast!” Tom experiences the impact of his volunteer work when he personally delivers food to clients. It’s clear to him that he is directly assisting his neighbors.
Tom’s wife Cathy also volunteers at SHIM, and they enjoy doing meaningful work together. We want to give them a quick congratulatory shout out as they recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary!
Tom loves the camaraderie of SHIM’s volunteer workforce. “They’re a great bunch and I love being part of the team.” We’re so grateful that Tom has chosen to take action to help his neighbors. With volunteers outnumbering staff by about 10:1, we know we couldn’t operate without dedicated community members like Tom.
