In a space where every rack tells a story of community generosity, the SHIM Clothing Closet stands as a testament to what neighbors can achieve when they look out for one another. While the physical footprint of the closet may not be vast, it is overflowing with warmth, friendliness, and the essential items that help local families thrive.
A Resource for Everyone
SHIM’s clothing program is designed to be a welcoming resource for anyone in need. Open weekly; the closet provides free clothing for all ages, from infants and growing toddlers to adults.
The people who walk through our doors come from all walks of life. Some are facing a sudden, devastating loss, such as a house fire, and need an immediate “one-time” hand to get back on their feet. Many others are regular visitors—hardworking neighbors who simply need a little extra help keeping up with the rising costs of living and the ever-changing sizes of growing children.
This year, SHIM reached an exciting milestone by bringing the Clothing Closet directly to our Back-to-School distributions for the first time. We recognized that while the need is great, our standard weekly hours can sometimes be a challenge for working parents and caregivers to attend. By creating this “mobile” version of the program, we were able to break down significant accessibility barriers, providing families with easier access to essentials just as they faced the daunting costs of back-to-school shopping. The initiative was a huge success, ensuring that more children headed into the new school year with the confidence that comes from a fresh outfit and the support of their community.
Driven by Generosity
This program exists purely through two pillars of support: community donations and the goodwill of volunteers. We are incredibly lucky to live in such a generous community where residents consistently donate high-quality clothing of all genders and sizes. It is this steady stream of support that keeps our racks full, and our clients clothed.
We are also incredibly grateful to our generous partners at South Hills Church of the Nazarene, who graciously host the Clothing Closet at their location, providing the essential space needed to operate this program off-site from SHIM facilities.
The Volunteer Engine
Behind the scenes, the “retail experience” is managed by a dedicated team of volunteers, overseen by SHIM staff. These volunteers are the heart of the operation, tirelessly sorting through incoming donations, tagging items, and ensuring every piece of clothing finds its proper place on the racks. Their hard work transforms a simple room into a dignified shopping experience where clients can find what they need with ease.
At SHIM, we believe that essentials like a warm coat or a pair of school shoes should be accessible to everyone. Thanks to our donors and volunteers, we are proud to continue providing these basics with the kindness and respect our neighbors deserve.
SHIM’s Clothing Closet is open on Mondays from 10am-1pm at South Hills Church of the Nazarene for those in need.
