SHIM is pursuing an exciting opportunity to better serve our neighbors by opening a new service center in the western South Hills. As we look toward the future, we want to share the “why” and “how” of this potential expansion with you.
Meeting a Growing Need
Our data shows a significant and growing need in the Bridgeville, Carnegie, Collier, Heidelberg, Scott, and South Fayette communities. In Carnegie, 39% of households fall below the ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) threshold, with Bridgeville following closely at 33%. By establishing a physical presence in this corridor, we can bring SHIM’s proven services directly to individuals and families who currently face transportation barriers to our existing locations.
Strengthening, Not Shifting
We want to be clear: this is about growth, not reduction. No programs or staff will be cut elsewhere to fund this project. In fact, the plan includes hiring new coordinators to staff the facility, under the leadership of our Basic Needs and Service Coordination directors. While we will start with core services, we may add family-oriented and youth programming in the years ahead.
Parallel Priorities
We understand that finding a long-term solution for our youth programs remains a focus. SHIM has the capacity to address the urgent need for a western presence while simultaneously working toward a stable, sustainable future for our youth services. We continue to evaluate the best options for our youth based on accessibility, cost, and long-term sustainability.
A Long-Term Vision Realized
While this opportunity may seem to be moving quickly, the goal of expanding westward has been a board priority since the early 2010s. We have spent recent years assessing needs and gathering input, and this specific property became available at a lease price that makes it the right time to act.
Costs are still being finalized as we work through design and buildout, and we will continue to share updates as planning progresses. Our Basic Needs team is providing vital input to shape how we utilize the space. SHIM’s leadership remains committed to making informed decisions that allow us to best serve our community while maintaining the health of our organization.
