The Almanac –Back-to-school events at SHIM
South Hills Interfaith Movement will host three back-to-school celebrations to provide more than 700 backpacks, donated by CentiMark Corp., and new school supplies to children in the South Hills.
At the events, children will have the opportunity to choose a new backpack and the school supplies they need for a successful academic year. The schedule:
- 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 12 at Pleasant Hills Presbyterian Church, 199 Old Clairton Road
- 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 15 at the Bethel Park Community Center, 5151 Park Ave.
- 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 16 at SHIM Family Center, 41 Macek Drive, Baldwin Borough
Regardless of income, all students in kindergarten through 12th grades living in these school districts are eligible to receive backpacks and supplies: Baldwin-Whitehall, Bethel Park, Keystone Oaks, Mt. Lebanon, South Park and Upper St. Clair.
Arts camp
Join children from across the South Hills for a week of arts camp at View Crest Church, 883 Linden Road, North Strabane Township.
Children ages 6 to 13, from beginner to advanced, will spend a week with qualified instructors who arepassionate about their craft. A healthy lunch will be served each day.
The camp is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 12-16. For more information and to register visit www.viewcrestchurch.org.
South Hills Coin Club
The next meeting of the South Hills Coin Club will be held at 8 p.m. Aug. 13 at Bethel Presbyterian Church, 2999 Bethel Church Road, Bethel Park. All members and the general public are invited.
This month’s program will be on silver coins and tokens. Applications are being accepted for membership. For more information, call 724-984-6611.
Summer festival
Our Lady of Grace Parish in Scott Township, partner parish of St. Bernard’s in Mt. Lebanon, will hosts its annual summer festival Aug. 14-17 at 1734 Bower Hill Road.
Restaurant-prepared meals will be served from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. each day: Bistecca Steakhouse on Wednesday, Cooked Goose Catering on Thursday, the Other Place on Friday and Texas Roadhouse on Saturday. Cost for dinner, drink and dessert is $15.
Following the dinners is live entertainment every night until 10, along with a Kids’ Corner, rides, bingo, games, raffles and festival food.
Hilltoppers of Scott Township
The Hilltoppers of Scott Township, a senior citizens group, will hold its monthly meeting Aug. 14 at Covenant-Community Presbyterian Church, 1630 Greentree Road, Scott Township.
Doors open at 11 a.m. for fellowship. Please bring a brown bag lunch and beverage to eat at noon. The Good Shepherd Church Handbell Musicians will perform. Visitors are welcome, and new members are needed. For information, call 412-341-8640.
Flea market
Bethel Park Recreation’s monthly flea market is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 17 at the Port Authority Parking Lot on the corner of Brightwood and Lytle roads.
Vendor fees are $10 for Bethel Park residents with used items, $14 for residents with new items and $14 for nonresidents.
