South Hills Interfaith Movement celebrates the South Hills

South Hills Interfaith Movement offers a variety of services for young people, including these individuals who attended the Celebrate the South Hills event.

The Almanac – South Hills Interfaith Movement hosted its annual Celebrate the South Hills with SHIM event May 23 at the Hilton Garden Inn – Southpointe in Cecil Township.

“This event is an opportunity to express our thanks to the people in our community who have made volunteerism and philanthropy a priority,” SHIM executive director Jim Guffey said. “Whether they ran a clothing drive, collected canned goods or made a generous donation, SHIM’s donors and volunteers stewarded positive change, altering the lives of children and families in our community for the better.”

Each year, SHIM makes a selection for South Hills Champions, and the 2019 honorees are Joneen and Ray Betler. Joneen spends her days helping others: family, friends, neighbors and members of their church. Ray is president and chief executive officer of Wabtec Corp. and is actively involved in the community.

“The Betlers are the true embodiment of neighbors helping neighbors,” Guffey said. “SHIM is proud to highlight Joneen and Ray’s many generous contributions to those who need it most in our community.”

The event included a reception, dinner, presentation from SHIM, and a silent auction to benefit the local families served by SHIM. Wabtec was the presenting sponsor.

South Hills Interfaith Movement, based in Bethel Park, is a human services organization dedicated to improving the lives of people in need across the South Hills. Services include working to reduce the devastating effects of suburban poverty among the working poor, unemployed, families, single parents, senior citizens, women, and the high concentration of refugee families in its service area.
