SHIM Dedicates New South Hills Family Center in West Mifflin

Ribbon-cutting marks expanded services and stronger support for families across the South Hills

WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. — Oct. 2, 2025 – South Hills Interfaith Movement (SHIM) today celebrated the official ribbon-cutting of its new South Hills Family Center, a safe, accessible and purpose-built space that expands the nonprofit’s capacity to support families in need throughout the South Hills.

Located at 1400 Lebanon Church Road, the Family Center is part of Allegheny County’s network of 22 Family Centers funded by the Department of Human Services. The new facility strengthens SHIM’s ability to provide neighborhood-based programs that support children from birth through school-age and foster stronger, more resilient families.

“Giving families the tools they need is how we build an Allegheny for All. This new Family Center not only welcomes families from across the South Hills, but also neighbors from around the world who have chosen Allegheny County as their home,” said Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato. “We’re grateful to have SHIM as a committed, exemplary partner in connecting with families in the South Hills, no matter where they’re from.”

Programs and services offered at the South Hills Family Center include:

  • Support groups for parents, dads, women and families
  • In-home visits for families with children up to age five
  • Nurturing parenting classes and family engagement activities
  • A food pantry serving more than 1,300 people monthly
  • Immigrant services and connections to housing, healthcare, education and legal support

“We’re proud to support SHIM’s new South Hills Family Center as part of our countywide network. Our Family Centers not only meet families’ basic needs in the neighborhoods that people call home – they create spaces of belonging that reduce isolation and connect families to one another and their communities,” said Erin Dalton, director of the Allegheny County Department of Human Services.

The new Family Center opened in April, and serves families in West Mifflin, Pleasant Hills, Jefferson Hills, Baldwin Borough, Whitehall, Bethel Park and other surrounding communities.

The new 12,000-square-foot space replaces SHIM’s previous locations in Wallace School and, earlier, rented apartments in Prospect Park. With the move, SHIM is better equipped to connect neighbors to critical resources, foster parenting skills, and create opportunities for community-building.

“I’ve learned so much from the families we serve—their resilience, their determination to start over in a new country,” said Courtney Macurak, SHIM director of programs. “It reminds me every day how important it is that SHIM is here to listen, respond, and help our neighbors thrive.”

About SHIM
South Hills Interfaith Movement (SHIM) is a human services organization dedicated to improving the lives of people in need across the South Hills. Since 1968, SHIM has worked to reduce the devastating effects of suburban poverty among the working poor, unemployed, families, single parents, senior citizens, women, and the high concentration of refugee families in its service area. SHIM provides short-term help with basic needs (food, clothing, utilities) and longer-term support (employment, financial planning, youth programs, family support) to help people build and sustain promising futures.
