In recognition of Earth Day, we wanted to highlight one of the main ways SHIM reduces waste—by leveraging Michael Brothers’ free recycling service.
If you’re not already familiar, Michael Brothers, located on Horning Road in the South Hills, offers a free, self-service recycling drop-off center that is open to residents 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Their facility collects the following five recycling streams:
• Plastics (#1–#7)
• Glass
• Cardboard
• Aluminum cans
• Metal
One of the most valuable aspects of this service, beyond being free, is expanded plastic recycling. While many South Hills municipalities only accept limited types of plastic, Michael Brothers accepts all plastics numbered #1 through #7, making it much easier to recycle items that would otherwise end up in the landfill.
Michael Brothers also shares information about what happens to the materials they collect.
If you’re looking for a simple way to reduce your environmental footprint, we encourage you to take advantage of this outstanding local resource.
