Investing in the South Hills: Why Giving Back Matters

By Jeff Moeslein, Owner, Legacy Remodeling

As the owner of Legacy Remodeling, I’ve always believed that a business should be about more than the work it performs. Yes, we’re passionate about helping homeowners improve their homes, but we’re equally passionate about improving the community we all call home.

The South Hills isn’t just where I do business- it’s where I live, where my family has built relationships, and where I’ve spent much of my life.

I have lived in Bethel Park, Baldwin, Dormont and Upper St Clair. In fact, other than a brief stint in Kansas City when I was 10 and 4 years attending Penn State at University Park, I have lived in the South Hills for my entire life. Moving back to the South Hills of Pittsburgh after graduation to be a part of my family’s “Legacy” along with my parents was a no brainer.

Legacy Remodeling is more than a business to me- it’s a family legacy. My dad started this company with a commitment to quality workmanship, honest service, and treating customers like neighbors. Watching him build the business taught me the value of hard work and the importance of earning people’s trust. When I had the opportunity to take over the company, I felt both proud and humbled to carry that legacy forward. Since then, we’ve worked hard to grow the business while staying true to the values my father established from day one. Today, it’s especially meaningful to have my brother working alongside me. Together, we’re continuing a family tradition while building a company that serves our customers and gives back to the community that has supported us for so many years.

Those roots have shaped how I view success. For me, success isn’t measured only by completed remodeling projects or company growth. It’s measured by whether we’re helping make the South Hills a stronger, more supportive place for everyone who lives here.

That’s one of the reasons I’ve been so grateful for our partnership with South Hills Interfaith Movement (SHIM). Their work touches thousands of our neighbors every year, providing critical resources and support to families throughout our region.

Over the past few years, we’ve looked for meaningful ways to support SHIM’s mission. Together, we’ve organized food drives that helped restock pantry shelves during times when community needs were especially high. We have also designated portions of sales during two different months to benefit SHIM, and thanks to the support of our customers, those efforts resulted in significant financial gifts that directly supported local families.

What has been especially meaningful is seeing how our customers have embraced these opportunities to give back. Every remodeling project completed during those campaigns became part of something larger than a home improvement project. It became an investment in our community.

I remember when I was younger my elderly grandmother relied on help from others. She didn’t drive and therefore needed the members of her church to bring her food from the food bank. This was a lifeline for her and to me it was a lesson in the importance of being able to rely on the community for help whether it is due to age, or job loss or any of a million reasons. Knowing that there are people who care and who will help was critical to her as it is to so many others. Now, as an adult who is blessed with the ability to give back, I want to make sure that I am a part of the effort to assist those in need.

Today, we’re excited to continue that commitment by sponsoring SHIM’s Back-to-School Campaign. This incredible initiative helps more than 1,500 local children start the school year with the supplies they need to learn, grow, and succeed.

For many families, the cost of school supplies can create significant financial stress. Through this campaign, students receive backpacks, notebooks, pencils, and other essentials that help them walk into their classrooms feeling prepared and confident.

As a father, business owner, and member of this community, I can’t think of a better investment than helping children start the school year ready to succeed.

One of the things I appreciate most about working with SHIM is knowing exactly where the support goes. The families being helped aren’t anonymous names on a report. They’re our neighbors. They’re the people we see in our schools, at our grocery stores, and throughout the communities we serve every day.

Although there are many worthy organizations that serve people across wider geographies, to me, it is important to try to give as much as I can to my own community. Growing up here in the South Hills I was involved in both the Boy Scouts as well as my local church. These organizations allowed me to serve my community through things such as my Eagle Scout project. I found it very rewarding to see my effort benefitting the community in real time and through participation rather than just mailing a check. Through participation in events with SHIM and other local organizations I have been able to continue giving back.

At Legacy Remodeling, we’re proud of the homes we help improve. But we’re even prouder when we can use our business as a force for good in the South Hills.

Thank you to every customer, employee, and community member who has helped make these efforts possible. Together, we’re building more than beautiful homes. We’re helping build a stronger community for everyone.

As we prepare to support SHIM’s Back-to-School Campaign, I hope you’ll consider joining us. Whether it’s hosting a school supplies drive at your business, church, or organization, or making a financial gift to support local students, every contribution helps. Together, we can ensure that more than 1,500 children throughout the South Hills start the school year with the tools they need and the confidence they deserve. When we invest in our kids, we’re investing in the future of our community—and that’s something all of us can be proud of. Learn more about SHIM’s Back-to-School Campaign and how you can help.
