Holistic Help Leads to Long-term Success

Lana (name changed to protect anonymity) reached out to SHIM as she navigated a cancer diagnosis. A single mother of one young child with no paternal involvement, Lana was nervous about how she would continue caring for her son during her cancer treatment. Her parents both died of cancer at young ages, so she was especially nervous about her prognosis and the bearing this could have on her son.

As Lana transitioned from regular employment to short term disability, she became eligible for SHIM’s Self-Sufficiency program and was able to meet with SHIM Service Coordinator Lisa Turske before having surgery.

Lana and Lisa met to set goals and create a case plan. This included coaching Lana on paying bills in accordance with her economic situation. Lisa was especially excited to integrate tools from SHIM’s newest program, Mobility Mentoring. Using the Bridge to Self-sufficiency, a goal setting tool based on brain science, Lisa helped Lana assess her current situation to find achievable solutions.

Knowing that SHIM can’t solve all problems, Lisa connected Lana to Footbridge for Families to help her pay rent. She then connected Lana to SHIM’s food pantries and clothing closet and provided her with tickets to the Upper St. Clair-Bethel Park Rotary Club’s BBQ Dinner.

“Having quality programs, adequate funding, positive partner relationships, educated and talented leadership, and support from dedicated donors and volunteers makes all of this work possible. I am able to bring all the good things about SHIM together to help give Lana some relief and some hope.” -Lisa Turske, SHIM Service Coordinator

Neighbors like Lana need more than a box of food or a free pair of shoes. They need guidance and encouragement to take the necessary steps that lead to economic stability. SHIM’s holistic programming and nurturing service coordinators provide help and hope to neighbors in need.
