The ongoing federal government shutdown is more than a political impasse — it’s a crisis for local families.
Starting in November, federal funding for SNAP (food stamps) is expected to pause, leaving more than 160,000 Allegheny County residents, including tens of thousands of children, without their monthly food benefits.
At the same time, WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) funding is also in jeopardy. Across Allegheny County, more than 11,000 pregnant women, infants, and young children rely on WIC for nutritious foods, formula, and essential health supports. Without new funding, these benefits could be disrupted as soon as November 1.
For families already struggling to make ends meet, the timing couldn’t be worse. The holidays are approaching, pantry shelves are getting bare, and every dollar counts. SHIM is preparing for a surge in need — and we can’t do it alone.
How you can help:
→ Donate to keep shelves stocked and food on the table.
→ Host a food drive with your workplace, congregation, or neighborhood.
→ Volunteer your time to help distribute food and support families.
Together, we can make sure no South Hills family faces this season hungry or alone.
