SNAP Rules Are Changing — Even After the Shutdown Ends

The federal shutdown may be ending — but for many, the long-term threat to SNAP benefits remains. New federal eligibility rules taking effect in 2026 will reduce or end food assistance for thousands of Pennsylvanians, including many families right here in the South Hills. Family Center Update

SHIM’s South Hills Family Center has relocated from 41 Macek Drive to 1400 Lebanon Church Road. Learn how this move helps us expand services and offer stronger support for families across the South Hills.

SHIM by the numbers:

SHIM helped 8,500+ individuals in 2024.
SHIM food pantries welcomed 870 new households in 2024.
SHIM food pantries benefitted 7,905 individuals in 2024.
Over 900 children receive food from SHIM pantries each month, and 200 receive over 5,000 diapers.
Last year 349 students benefited from SHIM’s Youth Programs.
SHIM provided over $71,146 in utility assistance through the Dollar Energy Fund to approximately 150 individuals last year.
Caring service coordinators helped 181 clients access $110,527 through essential programs related to financial hardship and housing stability.
309 volunteers powered SHIM programs, dedicating 15,302 hours in 2024.
