Individual opportunities – Immediate

  • Volunteer one or multiple days a week; Monday through Thursday, 4 – 6 pm
  • Support students in grades K-5
  • Provide homework help
  • Assist with daily programs
  • School year opportunity
  • Loading and stocking of bags and boxes of food twice per month at our Baldwin and Whitehall locations
  • Commitment: three hour shift twice per month
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds
  • Volunteer one or multiple days a week; Monday through Friday, 9 – 11:30 am
  • Help three and four year olds with arts projects, snack preparations and more
  • School year opportunity
  • Volunteer one or multiple days a week; Monday through Thursday, 3 – 6 pm
  • Help middle and high school students with math, English, science and history
  • School year opportunity
  • Assist families in SHIM’s shop-through pantry
  • Baldwin United Presbyterian Church Pantry: second and fourth Tuesdays of the month – morning and afternoon shifts available
  • Prospect Park Pantry: first and third Wednesdays of the month – morning and afternoon shifts available
  • Assist with hands-on STEM activities.
  • No formal electronic experience necessary.
  • Tuesdays
 6 – 8 pm
  • Prospect Park location
  • Help transport SHIM clients to our new location under a mile from SHIM Center
  • Volunteer one or multiple days a week; Tuesday through Thursday, times may vary by day, shifts are three hours
  • Must be comfortable driving a six or 15 passenger vehicle
  • Must be comfortable with immigrant neighbors
  • Mentor middle and high school students in a group setting
  • Plan weekly activities and off-site field trips
  • Two-hour weekly commitment
  • Mentors must be 18 or older and complete mandated reporter training
  • School year opportunity
  • Four male mentors and two female mentors are needed

Individual opportunities – Ongoing

  • Serves as the “Face of SHIM” and greets visitors
  • Accepts and records daily donations
  • Must have a welcoming personality, be a good communicator, have knowledge of office equipment and Microsoft Office programs, be able to climb stairs and lift 30 pounds
  • Volunteers needed for four hour shifts (8:30 am – 12:30 pm and 12:30 – 4:30 pm)

Sort and process clothing donations, stock clothing racks, manage clothing inventory

  • Mondays 9:30 am – 1 pm
  • Tuesday 12:30 – 4:30 pm
  • Fridays 9 am – noon
  • Driver’s assistant is needed for Tuesday mornings from our Bethel Park location to the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank.
  • Loading and unloading a van of bags and boxes of food.
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds
  • On-going, weekly opportunity
  • Volunteer will work on research and special projects, as assigned.
  • Experience with data entry and analysis is preferred.
  • Must be comfortable with computers and Microsoft Office.
  • Sort and process food donations

  • Assist families in SHIM’s shop-through pantry
  • Pantry receptionist
  • Pantry shuttle drivers
  • Baldwin United Presbyterian Church Pantry: second and fourth Tuesdays of the month
  • Bethel Park Pantry: second and fourth Thursdays and Fridays of the month
  • Family Center Panrty: first and third Wednesdays of the month
  • Weigh incoming produce from community partners
  • Package and store donations for distribution
  • Volunteers are needed on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings from June through October
  • Keep SHIM shining clean
  • Provide a wide range of maintenance services (plumbing, electrical, general repairs and maintenance, painting, etc.)
  • Assist in planning the annual SHIM Holocaust Observance
  • Serve as liaison between SHIM and your house of worship by sharing updates in congregation communications, organizing drives, helping recruit volunteers
  • Act as a SHIM representative to provide valuable information for SHIM’s programming and events.
  • Must enjoy being and working in a public setting
  • Various locations with non-traditional hours
  • Plant, weed, maintain and harvest during the spring, summer and fall growing seasons
  • Gardening experience is helpful, but not necessary
  • Volunteers are needed at multiple locations from May through October
