Recently, we received a unique donation from some students at Neil Armstrong Middle School in Bethel Park. Students in David Espinar’s class developed a project that would grow healthy vegetables in a way that was environmentally friendly. Their mission was to learn a new way of farming suitable to our region that would increase access to fresh produce. Students learned how to start and maintain a hydroponics system while learning workforce skills.
We were amazed to learn that students were able to grow lettuce faster- in 31 days- and with ten times less water than typical lettuce grown in gardens. They were also able to grow this lettuce during the winter since their hydroponic system was indoors. In April, they delivered 66 heads of lettuce to help feed neighbors in need.
Students took the time to learn more about SHIM by touring the pantry and asking questions about how their lettuce would help feed South Hills residents. We loved sharing more about the impact of their donation and look forward to future collaborations!
