Pittsburgh, PA (May 1, 2018) — South Hills Interfaith Movement will host its annual ‘Celebrate the South Hills with SHIM’ event. This year, the event will include a special celebration in honor of the organization’s 50 th anniversary. ‘Celebrate the South Hills with SHIM’ will take place on May 10, 2018, at Hilton Garden Inn Pittsburgh – Southpointe. The event serves as an opportunity to celebrate five decades of neighbors helping neighbors, thank SHIM’s donors, supporters and volunteers and honor the great work being done throughout the community. All proceeds will benefit local families served by SHIM.
“Thanks to our caring community and neighbors, SHIM has been able to provide its neighbors with basic needs assistance for the last 50 years. We are grateful to our supporters, volunteers, and community who helped us get to this milestone,” said Jim Guffey, executive director, SHIM. “We hope to celebrate the great achievements and work that has been done in the South Hills over the last 50 years, and look forward to our future of more neighbors helping neighbors.”
During this year’s ‘Celebrate the South Hills with SHIM,’ the organization is pleased to recognize John and Becky Surma, two local philanthropic leaders who have been paving the way in Pittsburgh for many years, as this year’s South Hills Champions.
“The Surmas have shown a long-time dedication to our community. SHIM is proud to honor and recognize them for their commitment to our region,” Guffey said.
‘Celebrate the South Hills with SHIM’ will also include special recognition of individual volunteers and stories of those who have received a little help from SHIM. Event-goers will participate in ’50 years of the South Hills’ activities and view special videos highlighting the community and SHIM.
The event, beginning at 5:30 p.m., will also include a reception, dinner, presentation from SHIM, and bidding opportunities to benefit the organization’s beneficiaries and work in the South Hills. Online event registration is available on SHIM’s website. The event is sponsored by Highmark/Allegheny Health Network, UPMC/UPMC Health Plan, Eat’n Park Hospitality Group, Mascaro Construction, St. Clair Hospital, PNC, Cohen & Grigsby, P.C., and other community partners.
South Hills Interfaith Movement (SHIM) is a human services organization dedicated to improving the lives of people in need across the South Hills. This includes working to reduce the devastating effects of suburban poverty among the working poor, unemployed, families, single parents, senior citizens, women, and the high concentration of refugee families in its service area. SHIM works to identify the most critical needs across the South Hills, then develops and implements effective solutions. SHIM aims to empower individuals and families to achieve stability and self-sufficiency by offering short-term help with basic needs (food, clothing, utilities) and longer-term support (employment, financial planning, youth programs, family support) to help people build and sustain promising futures.
