Achieving Self-Sufficiency

Early Childhood Program

Each week, 27 three- and four-year olds come to SHIM's Early Childhood Program (ECP), where they learn and have fun together as they get ready to take the next step to Kindergarten. SHIM's free program celebrates the uniqueness of each individual child-building on their strengths, assisting with their needs, and appreciating their special, individual qualities.

The kids come to school excited with tons of energy! They get started with a healthy breakfast, so they are ready to learn. SHIM's ECP teacher, Jennifer Smith, uses a variety of techniques to ensure her students are learning in the most productive way possible and works with curriculum that helps to engage and inspire all of the kids-many of whom are children from international families with limited English language proficiency. Students achieve new goals through purposeful play and learn fundamental concepts in fun ways.

In ECP, children are learning useful basic life skills during school hours, such as writing their names, learning to read and speak English and getting ready to enter the world; brushing their teeth and keeping up with good hygiene; eating nutritious foods; and memorizing their phone numbers and addresses for safety purposes. This September, 14 of the 15 children who completed ECP last May entered kindergarten fully integrated into the classroom, functioning without English Language Learning supports. Congratulations to our SHIM kids, and to Jennifer Smith for preparing the children for bright academic futures.
